Is the boating community about to take a giant leap forward with regard to VHF radio courtesy? Possibly, if boaters catch on to a new automated service for radio checks. Radio checks are probably the most common call heard on marine VHF radios. A day on the water just wouldn't be complete without hearing multiple requests for radio checks. Sometimes -- for example, one Memorial Day weekend a few years back -- they come from the same boat over and over again.

Taking aim at his third straight Single Operator title in the CQ WPX SSB Contest, Tom Georgens W2SC again has the high claimed score this year, as he leads FG/OM3LA by a wide margin. Georgens was the only single op to break 20 million points this year in what was another tough weekend in terms of propagation.

VY2ZM Leads SS SSB; W6YI Tops Again In Multi
While operators on the East Coast of the United States and Canada tend to dominate the top places in major contests, that usually isn't the case with the ARRL November Sweepstakes contest. But in 2010, Jeff Briggs K1ZM turned that conventional wisdom on its ear with the top overall score in the SS SSB test. Also, the Multi-Op SS Double seems to be in the bag again for Team W6YI.
