Early on the morning of Thursday, April 1, almost 40,000 people -- including Lincoln's government, business and emergency centers -- in Southeastern Nebraska found out that they had no landline telephone service, as well as spotty cell phone coverage, thanks to an equipment malfunction at a Lincoln switching facility owned by Windstream Communications. According to news reports, residents of 12 counties were unable to contact 911 and dispatch centers had to provide other ways to report emergencies -- including Amateur Radio.

KP2TM (K9TM) Leads ARRL Sweepstakes SSB Battle
Even with WP3R off the air after a ten year run of victories engineered by Rich Boyd KE3Q, the top single operator claimed score in the 2008 ARRL November Sweepstakes SSB contest is still from the Carribean, as Tim Mitchell KP2TM/K9TM owns the lead with 362,560 points. In other categories, W6YI leads the Multi-Op ranks, K7RL is tops in Unlimited and KC5R heads the QRP class.

CQ WW CW 2008 Europe: CU2X The Big Favorite
After easily outdistancing his competition in Europe in this year's CQ WW SSB contest, Toni Linden OH2UA will be on his way back to the Azores and his newly refurbished CU2X contest station for a shot at a third straight EU title. Linden though admits he remembers that last year he didn't win easily and isn't assuming he's going to repeat.
